Definitions and samples

  • expand (v.) to increase in size, number or importance, or to make something increase in this way

– Some of these pieces were later expanded into full-length books.

  • fade (v.) to (cause to) lose color, brightness or strength gradually

– Remember that most computer inks will fade over time if left in the sunlight.

  • increase (v.) to (make something) become larger in amount or size

– They had the choice of increasing the size of the dairy herd or changing the system completely.

  • promote (v.) to encourage the popularity, sale, development or existence of something

– They want to know how exactly you are going to use their cash to promote the product in the marketplace.

  • reduce (v.) make or become smaller or less in amount, degree, or size

-Nearly double is generally needed to significantly reduce the unemployment rate.
