Definitions and samples

  • typical (adj.) having the usual features or qualities of a particular group or thing

- What's the typical amount of work experience you're looking for in an applicant?

  • minimum (noun & adjective) the least possible amount; the lowest amount

- Studies show that adults need a minimum of six hours sleep.

  • scarce (adj.) hard to get; rare

- Because there is little moisture in the desert, trees are scarce.

  • annual (adjective & noun) once a year; something that appears yearly or lasts for a year

- The program will result in an annual savings to the county of nearly $2 million.

  • persuade (v.) to make someone decide to do something, especially by giving them reasons why they should do it, or asking them many times to do it

- The company said it was hoping to persuade staff to quit their jobs voluntarily.
