Definitions and samples

  • adjust (v.) to change something slightly, especially to make it more correct, effective, or suitable


- Instructors at the universities have been told to adjust their absence policies.

  • cure (v.) make healthy again after suffering from a disease or medical condition


- Researchers are testing this spice as a cure for cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

  • demote (v.) to lower someone or something in rank or position


- Two of the soldiers were demoted, and all three were ordered to forfeit their salaries.

  • disappear (v.) to become impossible to see any longer


- He looked around for a moment then disappeared around the corner.

  • dissolve (v.) if a solid dissolves, or if you dissolve it, it mixes with a liquid and becomes part of it


- Sometimes it's as if someone put too much sugar in the tea and it won't dissolve.
